RULES
- Participants must be between 18 and 30 years old.
- Participants must form an ensemble of 2 to 6 musicians.
- Participants must not currently have a commercial album produced under the leader’s name or under the designated group name.
- Only selected candidates will be contacted (please don’t call us).
- Participants chosen for the semi-finals must perform two original compositions as well as a compulsory piece.
- The pieces featured on the demo CD must be the same pieces performed during the contest.
- Application deadline: January 27, 2012.
- Participants selected for the semi-finals will be informed of performance dates and times by telephone.
- 9 to 12 groups will be selected to participate in the semi-finals. Five of these groups will advance to the finals.
- Contestants from previous years (apart from first prize winners) are eligible to re-enter the contest.
- Candidates who fail to conform to the rules or who give false information on the registration form will be automatically disqualified.
- Groups who fail to show up at the semi-finals/qualifying round will be charged a fee of $100.
First Prize
The winning group receives:
- 36 hours of in-studio recording time to create a professionally produced album.
- Mixing and mastering donated by Studio 270, Le Small mastering studio (Montréal) and Effendi Records.
- Copying and printing of 500 albums donated by RSB disques and Effendi Records.
EVALUATION CRITERIA
Selection of semi-finalists:
A panel of judges composed of three professional jazz musicians will select semi-finalists from among the applications received. They will evaluate the quality of the compositions and arrangements, as well as the overall talent of the musicians.
Selection of finalists and first prize winner:
Three judges will evaluate each group’s live performance. The audience will be able to take part in the selection via the Jazz en Rafale website (25% to each of the three judges + 25% to the public). Participants will be judged on:
- Presentation
- Stage performance (technique, musicianship, improvisation skills
- Quality of compositions
- Quality of arrangements
- Compulsory piece
NECESSARY DOCUMENTS
- Step 1-

- 1 registration form to fill in online (then print and send).
- 1 $60 check or postal order payable to Jazz Services (non-refundable). Bounced checks will incur an additional $10 fee.
- 2 copies of a demo CD in (containing 3 pieces). Pieces must be well-identified (title and name of the band).
