Born in Israel, double bassist Omer Avital has been active in the New York jazz scene since the early 90s. Beginning in 1994 he directed, for several years, small and big band ensembles during the “after-hours sessions at Small’s” with his pianist and long-time collaborator Jason Lindner. Among their sidemen can be seen Mark Turner, Myron Walden, Gregory Tardy, Joel Frahm, Charles Owens, Grant Stewart, Jay Collins, Jimmy Green, Ali Jackson, Joe Strasser, and Daniel Freedman. Since then he has continued his remarkable career, his latest album Free Forever released in 2011 having been met with great acclaim.
DownBeat – 4 stars out of 5 — “Avital’s music contains something of the passionate heft of another crusader, Charles Mingus. And for sure this is a crackerjack quintet.”
Musicians: Omer Avital (double bass), Joel Frahm (tenor saxophone), Jason Lindner (piano), Jonathan Blake (drums)
